Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Jason Kenney, and Andrew Bennett, Canada’s Ambassador for Religious Freedom, meet with Shi’a community leaders in Canada.
The group discussed key matters concerning freedom of religion for Shi’a Muslims, including the persecution some Shi’as face abroad, and ways in which Canada’s Office of Religious Freedom could support efforts to promote and protect their basic rights. Head of Al-Khoei Foundation's branch in Canada, Sheikh M. Reza Bagheri, was amongst the attendees.
During the meeting, Baird underscored Canada’s commitment to continue to speak out against egregious violations of freedom of religion, reject efforts by those who wish to provoke sectarian tensions, and condemn attacks on places of worship around the world.
This meeting follows from the visit of Andrew Bennett, Canada’s Ambassador for Religious Freedom, to the Al-Khoei Foundation in London in March
